What is the difference between DIPP and DPIIT?

DIPP and DPIIT refer to the same governmental body but under different names, reflecting its evolving role in India’s trade and industry development. DIPP, or Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, was initially responsible for creating policies to support industrial growth and foreign investment. In 2019, its name was changed to DPIIT—Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade—to broaden its responsibilities. This update reflected a greater emphasis on promoting domestic trade, overseeing e-commerce, managing intellectual property rights, and supporting initiatives like Startup India. DPIIT now plays a central role in policies that support both local industries and foreign investment, as well as regulating internal trade within India. So, while DIPP and DPIIT are essentially the same department, DPIIT’s expanded scope marks a strategic shift to foster growth across a wider range of sectors in the Indian economy.
